This Week’s Farm Update: Welcome Fall!
The kiddos joined us in the garden this week as we found ourselves shorthanded for all our harvesting. We set up their own homeschool workspace in our packing station, and when they finished crushing their homework, they joined us to harvest!
We have lots of extra insects in the garden, including mosquitoes, but thankfully we’re also seeing an increase in the number of spider webs, normal for fall, and we were visited by a very cool praying mantis, which doubled as a fun homeschool lesson and break!
The kids also helped us begin to propagate the lavender plants that surround the garden fence, in preparation for our Pollinator Habitat Program plantings this fall. These plantings will create pollinator-friendly and wildlife-friendly habitats around our growing spaces.
Our dear friend, and past employee, Aidan, visited us this week with his partner and they made a fun project out of the goat pen: upgrading the play structure to prepare it for a pallet swing, and burying an old tractor tire in the ground for a goat trampoline!
This week’s harvest will be very fall harvest reminiscent with sweet corn, onions, zucchini, butternut squash, broccoli, and root veg! We’re excited for the change coming and hope you are too!
