We had a lot of rain this week! It was enough that the ground stopped absorbing water and started moving it downhill. Gophers were flushed from their holes, and were seen walking in the grass and through the fields, trying to find another place to tunnel but the ground was simply too wet.
The runoff heavily reshaped the roads. Compost water flushed from the piles, making a tiny creek of compost tea, and in other areas of the farm, the heaviest downpours carried gravel and small rocks with it and cut deep crags into the dirt road. The open-air woodshop flooded and required a 3-man team to redirect the flow of water away, and squeegee out the floor. It doesn’t take long for water to rearrange things and fill all the low places.

This coming week will lean heavily toward maintenance: repairing sections of road, turning and remixing compost piles, and reshaping where we want the water to flow through the farm. The influx of water will do its work in growing food for the farm boxes.
In other amazing news, we discovered that Gandhi, our beloved LGD that was taken from us last year, has a brother in the area that just had pups! We had been told there were no surviving members of his litter intact, so it was a wonderful surprise. There’s a good chance we will be introducing his nephew to our farm and to you next week! He’s in for a real treat to be trained up by Azula (Jack’s dog, the matriarch of the farm dog team) and Chloe (our 2-year-old LGD).
